Crossing Cultures

Posted on Tuesday, October 31, 2023

No matter where you are in the world, you have a culture. We all view the world through our culture and experiences. In training, we are learning how to be aware of other cultures by knowing our own. When entering another country, you will encounter different cultural preferences. However, if we are unaware of the basic cultural differences, we can actually cause much harm and frustration, especially if we don't come into conversation with humility. For example, in America, we are taught that looking someone in the eye is a sign of respect. Meanwhile, in China, eye contact is seen as a challenge and/or a sign of disrespect.

So, how can we come in low and humbly to cultures? First, don't be scared. We will make mistakes and there is always room to ask for forgiveness. Do not worry about messing up so much that you interact with other cultures out of fear. Secondly, seek to understand. When we go with a humble attitude and seek to know the people and their culture, we create a loving environment and meet others where they are. Just remember the LORD has already revealed Himself to the people group you are called to minister to. So, don't stress, GOD has gone before you.
