Hi friends! I’m going to be real with y’all, I’m not one for writing much, but if the Lord can use me and my story to bring God glory, then I’m in! So jump in with me and let grace abound because this could be the start of something new.
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but I’m not your classic Texan. My parents and three older siblings immigrated from Brazil to the U.S. one year before I was born. Growing up with my Brazilian and American cultures colliding, my eyes were opened not only to the differences in cultures but to the beauty in them. Even so, I would’ve never actually imagined living abroad until I left home for college in Austin, TX. The more that God started showing me His heart for all His people, from every nation, the more that I saw myself using my passions for God’s kingdom. Little did I know that His plan involved moving me to a country I had never been to!
I heard about GoCorps from a friend, and the day I looked into the health sector positions, my eyes watered up because I was just reminded that God’s plan was truly better and immeasurably more than all I could ask or imagine. Even though I had to look up where Bulgaria was, I was drawn to this position because of how uniquely it combined my passions for public health, mentoring youth, and living out the gospel!!! Saying yes to going came down to simple obedience. I knew the Holy Spirit was calling me to go, and I knew I would regret not trying because of barriers like fear and support raising, so I took the leap of faith. Yes, there have still been obstacles to overcome, but the Lord has given me abundant peace throughout it all.
In the midst of COVID-19, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with my BSN, and soon after got my Registered Nurse license. Now, I’m preparing to leave for Bulgaria to start my position as a Healthcare Training and Public Health Volunteer. My ministry organization, Salt Ventures, has partnered with a local Bulgarian non-profit called the Pink Foundation which was created to provide a safe space to empower youth to their full potential through mentorship and life skills development. I will be a part of Pink’s Bulgarian team to introduce a new healthcare initiative at the Pink Foundation. Together, we’ll create a health education program and liaison with local hospitals and clinics to provide teenagers with future work opportunities so as to bridge the gap in Bulgaria's healthcare shortage. All the while, I’ll be salt and light as Jesus calls us to be, showing that our ultimate worth and hope is in Christ! I’m so excited about this next step in my life because I love working with kids and I’m passionate about the impact of both the gospel and health education in communities!
So, definitely not what I had envisioned for myself post-grad, but is it better? Heck yeah.
