Take the Rest

Posted on Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Life is busy, no matter where you live. Everyone always told me that when I moved to Africa my pace of life would slow down. I would enjoy afternoon tea, take naps, and just take my time throughout the day. I know some people live like this, but that is definitely not how it has panned out for me. I actually think I am more on-the-go in North/East Africa than I ever was in California. My days are booked from 7am-9pm daily. This just goes to show that, once again, expectations are to be held loosely and as offerings to the Lord for Him to do as He pleases. Yes, I know, He will do as He pleases no matter what. Trust me, a posture of sacrifice and servanthood changes everything, I promise.

I don’t know where you are finding yourself in the coming days, but my advice is this - take the rest. After 16 months (extremely busy months) in my new home country, I left for the first time and will be gone for two months. I wrestled with a lot of guilt over this decision - but everyone on my team (both in-country and back in the States) said the same thing: Take the rest! The Lord desires rest and rejuvenation for our whole selves - body/mind/spirit. For me, this rest looks like time away from the desert and 120 degree heat. It looks like going places that are full of greenery, connecting with friends and family, and attending conferences for workers in similar positions. I don’t know what the rest looks like for you - but plan for it and follow through. Don’t feel guilty for doing what you need to do to keep going. In the long run, you and the community you’re in will both thank you for it.
