Wait! This is what discipleship looks like?!

Posted on Thursday, August 26, 2021

My new anthem prayer over my adopted little sister is, “God, show this girl your faithfulness!”

She came to my house last week and we talked. It started with a discussion about relationships and respect. “Because what happened in Twilight, was not okay.” She said she paused the movie with her friends: “Guys, this ISN'T it.”

“K, I want to be like you when I grow up…”

“I want to be like you when I grow up…”

Then she started really talking… The girl’s got a lot of big decisions coming up as she’s going into her senior year of high school this month. She has a lot of options and maybe just now recognized that.

We prayed about it. (Together :) )

“And the thing is, I realize it’s my decision- well, mine and God’s decision- and I’m the one who deals with whatever consequences of the choice I make…”

We talked about God’s provision. GOD PROVIDES!!! Whether it be with finances, with language learning, with community around you, or even something as simple as green beans, God provides, and nothing can be a barrier to keep you from doing something if it’s what you want and if it’s what He wants.

I’m not proud of her for, “being a Christian.” I don’t want her to, “be a Christian,” for her to be a “better person,” or to have, “one more convert,” or even for her to go to Heaven… I just want her to KNOW GOD, so that she can EXPERIENCE THE FREEDOM of knowing that OUR GOD PROVIDES!! Of knowing that she is HIS BELOVED DAUGHTER, and that when she makes that decision, she never has to worry about anything. I want her to KNOW GOD, so that she can be SURPRISED and SPOILED by His riches and the way He loves His children.

Thirteen months later… Thirteen months of late nights, of tired conversations, of stolen chocolate chips, of being woken up from naps, of listening to high school drama… of being ridiculously transparent with my struggles, of messing up all the time, being selfish, and trying to give as much as I can… Thirteen months later, it occurs to me…

Wait! This is what discipleship looks like?!?!

P.S. Go look up the Twilight meme: "It's always, 'I love you,' and never, 'You're like my own personal brand of heroin.'" XD Because, "Guys, this ISN'T it."
