Having never been an older sister before, and now having my adopted Little and Extra Mama, I’m learning a lot about the fun advantages of being a big sister.
For example, a few weeks ago, my little sister was invited to a classmate’s birthday party. It was a pretty big deal. My Extra Mama, being friends with the classmate’s mama, knew that I might really enjoy getting to know their family, so she asked if she could bring me and if we could come a liiiitttle bit early to pick up my little sister from their house. ... Oh yes, we crashed the birthday party.
I won’t lie. It was really fun to be recognized by some of the students there. After having done my random few weeks of subbing in their school, those kids came up to me saying things like, “I know who you are. You’re that substitute aren’t you? What are YOU doing here??”
I enjoyed messing with them. “You bet I’m that substitute, and I know if you turned in that homework assignment or not. Better watch out!”
Needless to say I schooled them all in Foursquare.
The family made sure that my Extra Mama and I (the only adults not related to the birthday boy) got some good dinner and homemade ice cream cake. When I told the mom that her barbecue sandwhich was the best I had tasted since I left Texas, she set aside a Tupperware with my name on it! </3 :.)
At the end of the evening, I found myself inside their quiet house, drinking coffee, and listening to stories from the father (who actually studied youth ministry) about the impacts he’s seen through getting to be a part of young people’s lives for so many years.
It was cool because, silly as it sounds, I kind of felt like I had already met all of the people who would play a big, influential role in my life here… but God has this way of continuously surprising me. :)
I really enjoyed the whole thing. I think I like being a big sister.
