My letter to future Goers

Posted on Saturday, December 11, 2021

Hello future Goer! Wassupppppp. Wherever you are in your journey, take a moment right now to just marvel at who Jesus is. He is shining in glory, utterly beautiful, and the only one deserving of our attention. There is no point to anything we do if we don’t start here, with Him, in awe. Just take a moment to soak in His presence and tell him thank you. Jesus is so perfect, and loves you so tenderly…more deeply than you know! Agree with His love for you and the power of His truth in your life!

The biggest lesson I learned while living in Colombia over the last 2 years was that there are realms and dimensions to Jesus’ heart that I’ve never seen, and that He is longing to show each of us. Through the ups and downs of cross-cultural ministry, it truly all comes back to worship. Learn to worship Jesus in your alone time. Worship Him when you're in pain, when you get betrayed, or let down. Worship Him when He answers your prayers…lean into that joy! Worship Him as you cry out for clarity and help. While overseas, or even during support raising, you’ll be let down or face disappointment–worship is the antidote to bitterness. Friend, protect your heart from bitterness and discouragement…they’re beasts and can sneak in without you even knowing it. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, more important that you could do today than worship.

As you raise support and transition to life in a new country, make sure to enjoy the journey. Someone said this to me when I was in the thick of fundraising, and it really put me in check.  We get in such a rush to arrive at the next thing that we forget to enjoy the day by day. Challenge the desire to rush support raising, or moving, or learning a new language, etc. Turn on some music, go for a bike ride, hang with friends, whatever it is…remember to have fun! God doesn’t overcomplicate things like we do. Everything will get worked out as you lean into Jesus and delight in Him. You can trust Him!

As you lean into the unknown, setting your eyes on the One you love, remember His faithfulness all throughout your life. Reflection is such a practical way to unlock joy and gratitude. When I was in the thick of support raising (a very, very hard season for me) or in the first year of language learning (also hard lol), it helped so much to reflect on the progress I was making. Sometimes we don't notice the progress until we look back and are like “woah, I know way more than I knew!”. You’ll feel so frustrated and dumb while learning a new language and experience culture shock, but know that you’re not alone in the struggle of that learning process! It does get easier and you are more than capable! As you move countries, start a new job, make friends, learn a new language and culture, it'll be hard, but you WILL find your footing! The first 2 months will feel funky/hard, by 6 months you'll feel more competent/yourself, and by 1 year you’ll look back and be amazed at who you've become! It’s all worth it! Take the leap!
