It’s honestly crazy how fast two years has gone by. One of the most important things I’ve learned is how to look at a culture with mission in mind. I spoke with a friend and former church planter the other day, and he highlighted even how this skill can apply coming back to the US. Living as a “sent one” should be just as apparent if I’m living in the town I grew up in as it is when I’m in a new place, speaking a new language. It can sometimes take a fresh pair of eyes to see parts of even our church culture that are unhealthy or unbiblical.
Another very important thing I developed while overseas is a healthy and biblical theology of suffering and how it relates to living a missional life.
One thing I wish I’d have known before moving is that nothing really could have prepared me for the
transition. The shock is part of the process. That probably would’ve saved me a lot of stress.
The advice I give to anyone considering being a Goer is to go for it! This really is a priceless experience that will affect the rest of your life. I feel now that if the Lord were to ever call me again to a new project overseas, I wouldn’t hesitate. Growth doesn’t happen in comfort, and very often obeying God leads us into some very uncomfortable situations. My call was just the slightest holy nudge, but boy am I glad I explored that instead of ignoring it.
