As I look back on the trail I have walked these past four years, I see how God has a sense of humor. A month ago I graduated college and am now in the process of prepping to serve with GoCorps. Yet, my path getting here wasn’t close to what I expected at the end of high school.
At the start of senior year in high school, I wanted to become a pastor in the States. During high school, my favorite subjects were math and science along with theology. I disliked my classes which required essays, and Spanish was the class where I put in the work just to get the grade. Languages in general seemed to be something which weren’t for me. I did well in all my classes but had my preferences.
Fast-forward two years. My goal after college is to become a missionary. Practically all of my classes only give essays as assignments. One of my jobs is planning and leading missions trips to Mexico, and my other is tutoring for linguistics and grammar theory. At this point, I’ve looked back at my hike and wonder how God got me here?
Another two years go by and I am now graduated. I have a placement in Asia and am looking forward to learning the language. More essays have been written than I though was possible. Also I value this next section before of support raising to learning how to more fully rely on God and His community.
So what is the point of this? I’ve realized that God has a sense of humor which makes life so much better. If God kept to what I had originally planned and the path I wanted, I don’t know where I would be now. The one thing I can say is that life would not be nearly as exciting or have as many times where I have seen God work. So if God is calling you to something you didn’t plan on, go for it! I don’t know where God will take me, but now, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
