I recently discovered a new word that I really like: perichoresis. It means “mutual indwelling without loss of personal identity,” and often refers to the way that God exists in the Trinity.
It also has deep meaning for how God relates to us. He dwells in us, puts His very Spirit in us, and yet allows us to remain uniquely ourselves.
God transforms us and redeems us, but He also loves us just as we are. He delights and celebrates in the way that we are all unique. He loves our freckles, dimples, and senses of humor.
We can welcome Christ’s presence in our lives, and uniquely express Him to those around us. God can show His love to others by dwelling within us, and it’s a blessing both for them and for us.
Welcoming God into our lives is much like extending hospitality. We must make room, prepare ourselves, and show honor to our guest.
My local friends have taught me so much about hospitality. In this culture, there is always room around the table for another person. Any guests who come must be fed and served and taken care of. They have stories prepared to entertain and engage those who sit with them.
I want to clear out the corners of my heart and lay out the best parts of myself before God, so that He will feel welcomed and honored. He is worthy of the best reception, all my attention, not just a moment of my time. Having Christ dwelling in me means being ready for Him at any time, because He likes to show up unexpectedly. I want to have a clean and pure heart, that He will feel comfortable in.
He has done all of this for us, and more. God has welcomed us into Himself. He is our refuge, the place where we can feel safe and accepted, and loved. He has given us access to Himself, communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, I can make myself comfy in His presence and receive the honor and love God extends to us. He has made a place for us—we also have the choice to make room for Him.
