One of the things we often do to help our refugee friends during a home visit is reading mail. It’s not uncommon for our friends to bring us a pile of letters asking us which ones are bills and which are credit card advertisements. During one of these times, one of my refugee friends had a letter saying she needed to fill out a paper to update their address for the post office. After explaining this to my friend, I was expecting her to ask me to fill it out for her. But instead, she got a pen and began filling out the paper herself, occasionally asking me how to fill out certain sections. Sometimes she would say, “I’m sorry. I’m writing so slow,” to which I immediately replied, “It’s okay! You’re doing it, and that’s so good!” This may seem like a tiny task, but as I watched my friend carefully fill out the form, I felt incredibly proud of her. Seeing her have the confidence to apply her English in this way made me proud of how far she and her family have come in their transition and adjustment to the U.S. I’m continually humbled to work in a place where I can celebrate the seemingly small yet significant victories of my friends and neighbors.
