What is Grace?

Posted on Friday, August 2, 2019

The other day I was talking with a few girls who have become close friends, and they asked me (somewhat out of the blue) what does the word “grace” mean?

Caught off guard, I did my best to explain but to my extreme frustration I couldn’t articulate a simple definition for them. I walked away from the conversation kicking myself. What an incredible opportunity, and I had blown it! As I reflected on my struggle to articulate the definition of “grace”, I realized I rarely (if ever) talk about grace outside of the context of the Gospel.

That afternoon I wracked my brain, trying to figure out a definition that does not immediately bring Jesus into the picture but serves as a stepping stone to share Truth later. But my definitions kept coming up short over and over again.

Eventually I realized that I had given myself an impossible task. Grace is the Gospel. Other analogies will always fall short. Grace means everything to me; it is through grace and grace alone that I am saved. God willing, the next time this topic comes up, I can tell them that there is no other effective way to explain grace outside of the grace of God, in what He did for us through Jesus.

Though at the time I felt like I missed an opportunity, I realized that God used that conversation to give me a fresh revelation of His Grace and prepare me for the next time I talk with my friends. I also remembered that nothing happens outside of His will, and that there is no reason to beat myself up for “messing up” our conversation. There is GRACE for that, and He is in control. The moment I think that it is my responsibility to save people is the moment that I have lost sight of what is True. I can’t save anyone. And we can’t save ourselves by trying to be “good enough”. The only One who was ever “good enough” to not need grace and enter straight into the presence of Almighty God was Jesus; and yet He has endless grace for us when we fall short.

So, what is grace?

The answer is not what, but Who grace is. And He is everything.
