My Letter to Future Goers

Posted on Wednesday, November 13, 2019

Dear Future Goers,

Do you feel that palpable increase in heart rate? That bombardment of what if scenarios racing through your mind? Do you feel the excitement? Sense the worries? Anticipate with eagerness? Do you feel emotions you never thought could coexist?

That is a snapshot of how I felt when I said yes to going. When I surrendered my will and my future at the feet of Jesus.

But I almost didn’t. Fear almost stopped me.

Fear that I wouldn’t be good enough. Fear that God was calling the wrong person, I mean why would he choose me? Fear that I wouldn’t like it. Fear that I would forget all I learned in nursing school. Fear that I wouldn’t make a difference. Fear that I would be lonely. Fear of starting over. Fear of the unknown. Fear after fear after fear.

It was paralyzing. It was the enemy’s way of keeping me from obedience to the one true King - feeding me with lies about myself and about who God has created me to be. Lies about what “I” could or couldn’t accomplish. Lies about what life overseas would be like. The more I thought about going, the more these lies seemed to overwhelm me.

Until I realized they were just that – LIES. Fears strategically planted to keep me from being obedient to what I knew God had called me to.

So, I chose to trust in the promises of God. To replace the lies and the fears with His word, with who He has revealed himself to be over and over again in my own life. To trust in his faithfulness. In his goodness. His trustworthiness. His power. That He works all things together for the good of those who love him. To trust in his calling. That God knit me together, knowing and designing me with plans already in mind for my life before the creation of the world. That his will and plans will be accomplished on earth, with or without me.

Because ultimately, His work does not depend on me. God doesn’t need me. He is all-powerful. All-knowing. Has authority over every ruler and authority, over death itself. He is sovereign. He does not need me to accomplish his will, or expand his kingdom, or make his name known. He doesn’t need you. He can do it on his own.

But, yet, He chooses you. He wants you.

The one who fears, despite there being no room for fear in light of God’s love and power. The one who worries, despite God being in control of all. The one who disobeys. The one who doesn’t always love others as Jesus would. The one who is imperfect. Who sins. Who places other people and things before God, making them idols in their life. Who is prideful. Who doesn’t always give God the glory and praise and thanks he deserves. Whose eyes don’t always see the ways God is blessing them. Who overlooks the ways He is working.

Despite our imperfections, He chooses US. How beautiful that is! He chose to call you to this work, not because He needs you, but because He wants you. He wants to use you. He wants you to trust him. To be faithful to him. To be obedient. To lean on him. To see Him in new ways. To understand His Kingdom more fully. To bring His name glory. To proclaim His name here on Earth. To be light in the darkness. To mold you and transform you to more deeply reflect the very person of Jesus. To be a servant of Jesus Christ. An instrument to be used for His Kingdom purposes.

Do you believe that? The promises of God and who He has designed you to be?

Or do you believe the fear? The lies?

Which will you choose to believe?

I am so thankful I chose to refute the lies and trust in the promises of God. They have been reaffirmed time and time again over the last two years. We serve a God who is sovereign and more powerful than we will ever be able to comprehend this side of heaven, yet this same, immensely big God, knows our deepest of needs. He cares for us, he sees us, he hears us when we cry out to him in our loneliness and brokenness and hardship, and he is our comfort. What love he has for each of us! There is no room for fear when compared to the love of God.

We all have fears as we step into the unknown, when we say yes to going. It’s a natural human response due to our sin. But what we choose to do when those fears arise, that is what matters most. I urge you to name your fears. Write them down. And then surrender them at the feet of the cross; rebuke Satan and the power he holds in your life through them. Search scripture for Truth. Name your truth, the promises that God has for you. Write them down. Repeat them. Until they become what you believe and live out in your life.

Never allow fear, allow the lies, to keep you from obedience. From doing what God is calling you to do. Whether it is a big decision like going overseas for two years, or small, daily ones like making that phone call to a potential supporter or walking up and talking to someone in a new language, you never know what God will do because you said yes to him.
