New Apartment, New Country, New Year

By on Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

Happy New Year! 2018, here we come. For those of you who don’t get my email updates, we moved…countries. To sum it up, due to the ongoing visa volatility, particularly given our frequent travels in and out of the country, the team and organization have felt it best to move our location. Right now, there are just three of us on the field, but we will be adding 4 – 6 new members in the next 6 months. So, instead of waiting it out, and risking not getting in every time we travel out (and my boss travels at least once a month), not to mention not getting those teammates in, it was decided that… Read more >>

Far, Far Away

By on Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

I’m in the far east, and it’s different. That might seem like an obvious statement, but let me elaborate the ways it is different. Let’s start with ground rules: Rule No. one – don’t drink the water unless it’s been boiled first. Rule No. two - don’t eat meat from street vendors; stick with the veggies and rice. The streets and the metro are very clean, there are trash cans and even recycling bins practically everywhere, and strict rules about food and drink on the metro. There are also street sweepers and cleaning personnel everywhere. Walking down the side walk you’ll notice a 12” strip,… Read more >>

Whirlwind

It’s barely been a week since I left the states, but man, what a week! I boarded a direct flight to Germany on the 25th of October, arriving in Frankfurt on the 26th. From there, my three suitcases and I got on a train to the town where one of my best German friends, Linda*, goes to college. I don’t recommend traveling alone by train with 150 pounds of luggage, alas, there was no other way. After a few days in the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Valley) – Germany’s industrial center, including a tour of an old coal refinery, Linda and I boarded a bus (think touring bus) to get to our home town. When we… Read more >>

One-Way Ticket

By on Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

I bought my tickets! No, ticket. Singular. Well, technically I have multiple tickets, because the first one gets me to Germany, where I’ll stay with friends for a week, and then I’ll have another ticket to get me to my final destination. But that’s beside the point. It’s really happening. I’m actually leaving the country, and I don’t have a return ticket. It’s a little strange not knowing when I’ll be coming back. There is a lot I still have to do before I leave. I have to continue my language study, become an expert in Office 365, and sort through my belongings and start packing. But how do… Read more >>

Holy Places, Holy People

By on Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

Earlier this month I visited a “holy place” in my home state. It’s a Catholic shrine to a sainted woman by the name of Frances Cabrini. It was a beautiful day and I spent two hours wandering the grounds of this retreat spot. I walked the meditation path, climbed the 300+ steps of the prayer stairway, explored the Cabrini Garden, and visited the Grotto and The Spring. It was peaceful and restorative. I also spent some time learning more about this remarkable woman. I won’t regale you with the details, but suffice it to say, she was a true woman of faith, and someone well worth emulating. Which… Read more >>
