Valor de la Familia (Family Value)

(My first blog I wrote in Spanish! Then I translated it to English!)

I have learned many new things about the Mexican culture here in Mexico. In my opinion, the most important idea is about family. While living with two Mexican families, I have learned that the family is significant. With any opportunity, my Mexican families went to my uncle’s, grandparent’s, or cousin’s house to hang out with them all the time. They didn’t need an important reason. Therefore, there were many times when I came home to a visitor. Through them, I saw and learned that time with family is a priority and valuable. I do not need an excuse or a reason to reunite with family. I must get together and do life with them always.

When my family lives in different countries, it is very hard to have time to see them. Furthermore, it was never necessary to see my family in South Korea because honestly, I do not have a close relationship with them. However, during my time with my Mexican family, I noticed that it is important to spend time with family, and therefore, I decided that I want to get to know my grandma and family on my mom’s side in South Korea. Right now, I am looking for a job to be a teacher at an international school in South Korea for the next school year. With the job in South Korea, I will have an opportunity to know and do life with my family there.

This past week, my grandfather passed away suddenly. He was a very healthy; hence, when my grandfather passed away, the entire family was shocked. I bought my ticket to attend the funeral along with my cousins. At his funeral, I saw all of my uncles, aunts, grandfathers, grandmothers, and cousins that I had not seen for two years or more! A lot of my family flew from different parts of the state and South Korea. It was a sad and bittersweet time because we reunited to say our last words to our grandfather, but I got to see my extended family. I have not seen many of the family members for two years!

I have learned that family value is a priority for many Mexicans. I am very thankful that now, this value is a part of my life also. I have learned, seen and lived this value out with the Mexicans daily. I have a question for you guys: When is the last time you did something with your families?
