These are the people that I have come to love so much here in Mexico. Language barrier got nothing on us! I don’t exactly remember the first day that I met them, but I know I met them this time last year. Since then, I have shared so many moments with them! I’ve shared so many laughters and jokes with them. They’ve given me so many learning opportunities; both good and bad. At my lowest, they lent me their shoulder to cry on; I was actually sobbing really hard. Rosalba and Jose cared for me as if I were their own daughter. At one point, they dropped everything, while they were working, to make sure that I was okay. Their generosity and love brings me to happy tears all the time!
This screenshot was taken at 2:21AM (their time) and 5:21AM (my time in Chile) January 4, 2018. They had called me at midnight to wish me a happy birthday, but I was fast asleep. I somehow woke up at five in the morning and called them back! This is them right after they closed up their taqueria. My audio wasn’t working, but we were laughing over this short video call. This was the best birthday present ever! My heart was so full that day and it was the best start to my 26th birthday!
They had more in store for me once I got back from Chile. I got to celebrate my one year in Mexico with them on January 10, 2018. The invited me out to dinner at a seafood restaurant! Throughout the dinner, Jose, the dad, kept telling me to order more stuff because they were celebrating my birthday! However, I couldn’t stuff anything else into my stomach. Afterwards, they took me to their favorite Italian bakery in Mexico City. They let me choose my own chocolate cake. They bought me an entire chocolate cake ya’ll! We went back to their place and indulged in all the chocolate goodness! We danced and had such an amazing time! Couldn’t have asked for a better one year and birthday celebration! It was amazing!
The following week, they invited me out for tacos! (Yes, even though they have their own taqueria, they venture out to other taquerias as well!) We went out, but I didn’t eat much because your girl was having some stomach issues, again! Afterwards, we went to their house. They told me to close my eyes and put my hands out. At first I was hesitant, but they started hanging a bag and another bag and another bag onto my hand. They were presents for my birthday! They got me a shirt, a cardigan, and a really nice coat! I kept telling them that it was too much, but they insisted that it was okay. All the clothes fit me because Brianda had sneakily had me try her jacket on the previous time I had seen her last year! They’re good!
I live about forty minutes away from them now, but every chance that I get, I try and visit them. I don’t get to see them every day, but it has been the highlight of my week every time I get to see them!
After some reflecting, I’ve come to realize I thoroughly enjoy talking and joking with them because they, as an entire family, have so much patience for me. You have to understand, I don’t always understand all the Spanish that is being said to me the first time around. I ask people to repeat themselves a couple of times, and sometimes, people reword their sentences in such a way that I can understand them. However, some people have simply told me, “forget it.” Every time someone has said that to me, it has hurt a little.
I have been beyond blessed.
