No Room in the Inn...

Posted on Wednesday, December 27, 2017

As the Christmas season comes to a close, I find myself really missing home and all the traditions that come along with it. The first Christmas away was spent wandering through the streets of London in complete awe that I was living in Europe! But this Christmas, there was nothing new or exciting about it. It is normal life now.

This year for Christmas I spent time with different friends and teammates through the day, but I also had a few hours to myself, and was able to spend some time reading and reflecting on the story to the birth of Jesus. I realized that, to be honest, I have never really celebrated Christmas just for the sake of celebrating the birth of Jesus. When presents and family and Santa Clause were all stripped away, I was left wondering what the hype of Christmas was.

As I read through the story, I was fixated on these words, “there was no room for them in the inn.” I could hear the words being repeated, but that’s not the only place there isn’t room.

All of the hussle and bussle of Christmas season can often leave us over focused on the best presents, the ugliest sweater or the most delicious turkey. Santa Clause too easily becomes the reason for the season and our celebration of Jesus is condensed into an hour Church service. We, or at least I, don't leave any room for Jesus! The whole reason we are supposed to be celebrating!

As much as I missed the traditions, family, good food, and the whole Christmas experience, I was able to, for the first time, experience the richness of the story of Jesus coming alive. The humble beginning of the savior and more importantly the hope that came through him was able to touch my heart in a way it never had before. I was able to see the true gift of Christmas, the gift that Santa Clause can never give.

Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with all of the celebrations we take part in! They are fun, enable us to laugh and relax with family and friends, and can bless others tremendously. My problem, and I think the problem for most, comes when we don't even realise that these silly celebrations have overshadowed the thing that had multitudes of heavenly hosts praising God and wise men coming from distant lands to see what the prophets had foretold!

As much as I missed everything back home, this Christmas I was finally able to make room for Jesus.
