Unexpected

Posted on Monday, April 2, 2018

Back in the States, it was just a normal part of life that I would listen to music and sing along as I drove from place to place in my little car. I've noticed lately, though, that I don't have much of a singing voice anymore. I wouldn't claim to be a great singer, but whatever ability I had before seems to have disappeared.

I wondered at first what could be affecting my vocal chords. I mean, my speaking voice is still the same as it's always been, so why is singing so different?

Then I realized, "Oh, I'm just out of practice." I don't drive here. I walk everywhere I go. My former personal concert hall now belongs to someone else back in America. I still sing along at church and during our worship times as a team, and I still listen to music a lot at my house, but that extra time for singing during my daily commute is gone.

What an unexpected detail. There are so many little things that are different about my life here, many of which I was prepared for, but no matter how much we prepare for cross-cultural life, we'll always encounter unexpected changes. That's not something to complain about or be afraid of, though. The unexpected is what makes life even more of an adventure.

I'm thankful that I'm not fully in control. My life would be incredibly boring if I were to dictate things according to my own comfort and familiarity. Instead, I trust the One who led me here, who is guiding my adventure. I choose to trust Him, down to the smallest detail.
