The end of August marks my 6th month and saw my first VBS here! It was 5 days of over 100 refugee kids and their moms being loved on and having truth demonstrated through crafts, games, lessons, skits, worship and lunch. I got the immensely rewarding job of co-leading worship. All in the native language, tons of hand-motions, and lots of smiles as I saw not only kids but moms joining in – covered women clapping and singing lyrics like “Jesus is Lord” and dancing along as we shouted that He lives, loves, saves, and is coming back.
Explanation for the picture: During VBS, there were several languages circulating. Sometimes the only way we could communicate was through hugs, smiles, and incredibly touching gifts like this flower one little girl gave me.
Speaking of lanuage, my reading has progressed such that my language helpers and I can read the Bible together with decent comprehension! It’s decent on my part due to limited language, decent on theirs due to limited understanding of the Bible in general. It’s lead to some great conversations. One helper, M, came to a lesson shaken by news someone had cast magic on her and said she was feeling a weight on her. We were able to talk about Jesus’ power over all forces and prayed in His name. Soon after, she reported peace in her heart. She has been meeting with other believing language learners and reading the Bible, so during our lessons I’ve been able to answer several questions she’s had and explain the gospel. She is now interested in visiting church!
These stories are just two examples of how God is softening hearts and opening doors. Please pray for the truth to be made known in the lives of refugees and locals alike, that we walk and share in wisdom, and that God's glory be manifested through it all.
