My dear potential and/or fellow Goer,
We have never met. You have your own set of experiences, dreams and expectations and I have mine. That being said we are family. We both are living the life God has given us and doing our best to grow in relationship with Him. Part of my history with God has been working in the Middle East for a season and God could be inviting you into a 2-year overseas commitment as well. Go for it. Try it out. Enjoy the journey. Don't sweat the small things and in all things seek God.
Among the truths I have acquired from my experience abroad is the fact that God genuinely has something special to do through you. I have a feeling you might have heard this before but let me share a story. When I arrived in my city I was one of two guys on my team and the only single guy. I had literally no companionship in what it was like to be a western single guy living in my community. I did have my teammates and I was living with two single guys who were foreigners, though non-western and non-English speaking, and I felt lacking in community. However, within the first couple of weeks I met a local single guy who spoke perfect English and had worked for years with westerners. We started hanging out almost everyday and became very close friends. This friend of mine had come to distrust locals of his nationality and had, probably an unhealthy, trust of foreigners. But with him being who he was and me being who I was, we became friends. God used our unique personalities to bring us together into a wonderful relationship that saw us building each other up in the knowledge of Christ. I mention this friendship because it is the example of God working through individual identities that is closest to my heart. I had to do nothing more than be myself to minister to my friend and likewise for him to minister to me. God even used my friend to redeem the image of his nationality in the eyes of the foreign refugees we were serving. And God used the various spiritual gifting of my teammates to build up my friend and me. I say all this because you have been made in a way that is utterly unique, who you are in all of your aspects in the hands of God will be used for the restoration of this world and His glory.
As you contemplate the overseas commitment be sure to get as much information as you can about the company and team you will be working with. Practically, try to Skype with all future teammates to get a feel for personalities and the difficulties and blessings you will face should you chose this experience.
As with all things in life you have a choice. And as God sais: he will never leave nor forsake you.
May God bless you with all good gifts in whichever way you choose to serve Him,
Fabian
