K traveled again to pick up another death certificate. They were seven that he knew in the end. One in prison and six dead, the first body found being the one of the guy who stayed with us. One lived to tell the story, how they were 300 crammed on a dilapidated fishing boat and when the smugglers showed up with 150 more they had to threaten the captain with death so that he'd go. When the boat capsized and started to sink the ones enclosed in the fish lockers below deck started to claw at the wood but wouldn't escape.
When I ask K how he's doing I get a: "I'd be lying if I said I was ok." The seven were all under 21. K went to ID the bodies. Staying at a hotel he spent his days running from hospital to hospital, bribing morgue staff so that the guy who had the key would "show up." The hospital staff doesn't care to keep a record so K has to open each and every body freezer. All the corpses have been in the water too long. The only thing you can tell is gender and race, beyond that you have to go off of clothes and contents of pockets. Freezer after freezer, corpse on corpse, some freezers don't work. K sees them all, five of the six are found, one is lost, there are death certificates to collect.
The school year has started. K is in his last year of college. He moves closer to campus. Before he leaves we hear him talking in his sleep: "No, that's not him. That's not him."
