Language Learning has probably been the hardest part about moving oversee. Recently a few of us decided to take a day trip to Brussels. For us Americans that sounds super foreign, but a round trip via airplane to another country can take less than 2 hours and cost less than 20 Euro. Praise the Lord!
Back to Brussels, so we arrive in Brussles, and this is our first time out of Germany since arriving in January. We have been so intent on using German as much as possible but also remembering we speak like children and don't have a large vocabulary.
For those who don't know Brussels functions primarily in French and English. However you can see signs in German, French, English, and Flemish. I would say you know language learning is going well when you have the opportunity to speak in English but you keep going back to your broken, child-like German.
We couldn't stop! While ordering food, it was so hard to say, "Can I have..." instead we often said, "Ich hatte gern..Entschuldigung,...I mean I would like..." It was foreign to hear people speak English, it was foreign to not struggle over finding the right German word. Well, it actually turned out it was a struggle to form a decent English sentence.
Oh how the Lord is faithful! German is such a schwer "hard" language, and the Lord has brought us light years in both our understanding and confidence! Praise Jesus for the internal work he is doing with us.
