All roads lead to Germany?

Posted on Sunday, February 28, 2016

The joys of living in such an international city. Before coming many people told me it would be so easy to communicate in Berlin because everyone knows English. Right but WRONG. The primary language I hear is definitely German. More importantly, many Berliners won't speak English unless their English is perfect! So as I stumble over my German they continue to respond in German even if they know English. Yes, it is as difficult as it sounds.

Nevertheless, this is such an international city. I know the saying is "all roads lead to Rome" but I think it should really go, "all nationalities live in Berlin for a year or more". I currently spend most of my day in language school where I get to meet people from all over the world! So far I've been invited to holiday in Italy, a weekend drive to Prague, and a trip to Paris.

Most of my day is learning the language and culture of Berlin. This is obviously a post-Christian culture. However, it’s really interesting trying to understand exactly what that means. There are so many different cultures, backgrounds, ideologies, worldviews, and languages here. Post-Christian sounds like one thing but I'm not exactly sure what that means yet for each individual person. Honestly, a lot of Berlin feels like America. Yes, there are differences as small as crossing the street or throwing away trash or small talk, but people are relatively similar.

I'm don’t have a full understanding on many things here but I’m excited to see how/when the Lord reveals to me how the city thinks of him. For now here's a verse that brings much delight:

"And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’" Acts 17:26-28
