For the past two years I have had the privilege of being on a big team here in Berlin. This means that we have now had two more generations of Goers join the team since I have landed. (And more are coming!) It is amazing to be reminded of where I once was- fresh in Berlin! These new team members have also helped me see how I have grown in the past two years as they remind me of some of the joys and struggles of overseas work. Recently one of my co-workers and I were talking about motivation in our generation- why is it sometimes difficult to get us motivated and committed?
It reminded me of the process I went through as I was deciding to make a life change. Two years seemed like such a big commitment. I had recently turned 25 before I moved to Berlin. I couldn’t imagine coming back to the States as a 27-year-old- how would I ever catch up with my friends and family and their “normal” life? Well, here I am, staying a third year with my organization. And I tell you what: I am turning 28 in a couple of months and I couldn’t be happier. I know I am where God wants me to be and that is what really matters.
So, if you are reluctant to sign up for two years because you feel a little “older,” don’t let that be a factor in your decision making process. Two years seemed like such a long time, but honestly, maybe it isn’t enough. It wasn’t for me :)
If there is anything that I would have wanted to know before moving to Berlin it would have been this: God knows the desires of your heart and he cares so much about you as an individual. He knows the hopes and dreams you had when you were a child, and the hopes and dreams you have now.
I felt like God was calling me to Berlin for a specific purpose. I didn’t know that he was going to make my dreams come true. But it was here that God reminded me of things he spoke to me long ago, and started transforming- away from all that had distracted me back home. (Here is a video you can watch to understand a little more of my story)
And that is what I want for you. I want you to experience that same about of God’s will being fulfilled in your life- and even more!
So be obedient and follow God’s call. You won’t regret it.
