Music is one way that I feel like I really connect with God. The lyrics in worship songs really speak to me and many times I feel like God has certain lines stand out because they are a message for me. Songs are one way God talks to me, and that’s something I’ve been missing while I’ve been in Germany. In church the songs are normally ones I’ve never heard of and they are auf Deutsch. Occasionally though there is a song I know but the lyrics are in German, this is great except I’m typically so focused on correct pronunciation that I can’t focus on getting my heart into a place of worship.
A couple weeks ago, I was with a group and we were singing worship songs. Again I was struggling getting into a place of worship, that is, until we reached the 3rd song. The title said “Meer” and I thought, “Sea? That’s an odd name for a worship song; I don’t think I know this one either.” Then the woman started playing the piano and the song did sound familiar, and then it hit me like a ton of bricks, “Ohhh! It’s ‘Oceans’!” I laughed at my foolishness and then began to sing, and my heart was glad because I felt like God had given the song just to me. I was so happy at that moment there was no way I couldn’t be in an attitude of complete worship to my Savior.
The song “Oceans” is very dear to me, it’s a large part of the reason I’m in Germany right now. As I stated, God speaks to me through worship songs, and He called me through this song. There’s a lot of other back story to this, but the main lyric He spoke through was, “Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders, let me walk upon the waters, wherever you would call me.” After some changes in my life that left me with no direction, all I could do was cling to the truth of Jesus; my trust was all in Him and that’s when He called me to take seriously the desire He gave me to help victims of trafficking and also to move overseas. And well, I listened, and now here I am! I thank God for calling me and listening to that call was one of the best decision I ever made.
*I wanted the video to be with German lyrics, but I couldn't find one
