Christmastime in Berlin has reminded me that it is not about the Christmas decorations (especially those revolving around Santa, reindeer, or other characters). While it is nice to have a decorated tree, lights hanging on the wall, or red and green placemats, that is not what Christmas is about. These things definitely help it feel more like home and help combat homesickness during the holidays, but I need to remind myself that I do not need these items. The idea of the Christmas tree came to my mind when I was thinking about this. It starts as a basic pine tree. There are lots of those in the world. Yet, for a small time of the year the pine tree becomes a huge deal. Most people have one (real or fake) in their home and take this basic, humble tree and turn it into something brilliant and colorful with lights, decorations, and ornaments. This image of a humble pine tree reminded me that Christmas began with humble beginnings as well. A baby born amongst the animals was how Christmas began. However, these humble beginnings were the world's best gift ever! Keeping with my analogy: Jesus appeared to be a "regular pine tree," but turned out be the best one ever. He shone light everywhere he went and brought joy!
God has also humbled me in many ways during my first two and a half months in Berlin. I said "God, I don't want to be a part of ...." and then I learn that is exactly what I am a part of. I said "God, I want my independence and comforts" and then he puts me in situations where I need to give those up. I have learned so much about myself since coming here. Things that would have taken me years to learn because I never would have been tested in the same ways I have been here. I have learned good things and not so good things. I have learned that people are complicated and that it takes effort and hard work to build a relationship and love them. Relationships are not just, "Hey, how are you?" "Good." "Oh that's good. See you later." Intentionality and grace are two important factors when working with people.
Right now, I pray that God wil continue to humble me and that I remember the reason we celebrate this season. Why don't you take time to reflect how God has taught you something? Feel free to share!
