After a 6-hour bus ride, 8-hour canoe ride, and a 3-hour hike, we finally reached the top of Lili Wampon, a breathtaking mountain that offers a stunning view of our target villages, Bencheng and Wompan. As a team, we paused to admire the beauty of the landscape, knowing the journey had been worth every step.

Living in the village you don't find many buildings to occupy. Why build when gathering under the mango tree bring the town together? People gather here under the tree for town meetings, market night, and drama performances.

Community dance and drama performance under the local mango tree. Girls are preforming a tradition Busoga dance from eastern Uganda. Girls use the dancing and traditional wear to attract a crowd and then they preform a gospel related drama.

Garrett Shue joins locals children Lyle, Anja, and Masha to celebrate Papua New Guinea’s Independence Day in traditional attire. Wearing dog teeth headbands, shell necklaces and belts, and clothing adorned with the Bird of Paradise, they also carry wooden hunting spears. It was a joy to embrace the rich culture and heritage of PNG alongside these incredible kids.

My team and I are friends with 2 pairs of siblings - one being sisters from Houston who are Bulgarian and another being brothers from Michigan who are also Bulgarian. It really is by God's divine appointment somehow that we all met and have been able to become friends together. They have been huge bridges into the culture while still being familiar with American culture because they grew up there. Without knowing these 4, life in Sofia would have looked completely different.
