Buffalo City is a metropolitan municipality (BCMM) situated on the east coast, along the Indian Ocean, of Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. It includes the towns of East London, Bhisho and King William's Town, as well as the large townships of Mdantsane and Zwelitsha. Within the vicinity of the city of East London and its outskirts, Mzamomhle and Cambridge are two of the numerous township communities. In keeping with socioeconomic trends in townships across the country, which are remnants of the previous days of apartheid, residents are generally extremely impoverished and especially vulnerable to problems such as poor education, high unemployment (over 70%), geographic isolation, violent crime, substance abuse, domestic abuse & broken families, orphaned & vulnerable children, chronic illnesses & malnutrition, poor housing & infrastructure, and environmental devastation & exposure to hazards – just to name a few.
Land of the Living is a registered non-profit organization whose vision is stimulation of sustainable transformation within impoverished communities across the area by enabling local people to build upon what they already have. Land of the Living operates a registered green enterprise – which serves to train, equip, and practically support unemployed youth to generate a livelihood through environmental conservation & recycling; to mobilize citywide involvement in environmental cleanliness; and to generate revenue to help sustain community transformation projects including an Entrepreneurial Training Program. We have established a youth learning program that provides needed support to catalyze this process of small business development – with unemployed youth to start up, and with those who already run small or informal businesses to grow.
If you have a passion for business as a key ingredient leading to holistic transformation, and want to help others build their businesses to succeed, come be a part of entrepreneurial training, mentorship, support & discipleship! You will work together with our Entrepreneurial Training program facilitator and local community partner, helping to implement entrepreneurial training, mentorship & follow-up support. You will also help strengthen the connection between these community programs and our citywide environmental enterprise - enabling establishment of local youth-run businesses focused around waste recycling & environmental conservation (as well as businesses with other potential areas of focus).
