80 miles off the coast of Venezuela, the ABC Islands can be found, one of which is Bonaire! Bonaire, a small island boasting only 111 square miles, is home to nearly 23,000 people. A beautiful Caribbean island, Bonaire is known for its warm, sunny weather all year round. Tourism is the largest factor of Bonaire’s economy and tourists are often found snorkeling and scuba diving in the island’s fringing reefs.

Bonaire was formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles, but is now considered a special municipality within the country of the Netherlands. Around 80% of Bonaire’s population are Dutch nationals. The locals are often found speaking either Dutch or Papiamentu. The island is heavily influenced by the Catholic faith with many nominal Protestant Christians and atheists/agnostics. The island also has an Islamic center and a Jewish community.

While there is certainly a need to minister to locals (and our staff members are also involved in local ministry), our ministry focus on Bonaire is maintaining the radio antenna. Our ministry started work on Bonaire in 1964 (as our ministry's second transmitting location) and is now home to the Western Hemisphere’s largest AM transmitter (450,000 watts). Shine 800AM broadcasts more than 25 programs in Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and several indigenous languages. With this antenna, our ministry can reach Cuba, unreached people groups of the Amazon, and many other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with the life-changing hope of the Gospel.

Engineers at our Bonaire station are involved in a variety of different projects…flexibility is the name of the game. While you might be using your electrical engineering skills to assist the team, you will also be involved in other tasks which might include tower maintenance, programming, IT assistance, etc. You will be involved in collaboration with the team and creative problem solving to ensure that broadcasts continue to air successfully.
