Goer blogs

Just roll with it...

By Dana on March 19, 2018 Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

It’s been quite the month. I feel like all my blogs open this way. Well, it’s true. No two months are the same, and so far they have all held their own unique challenges and excitements. This month, it’s been utilities. I’ve had three weeks now to settle into my apartment and start learning the language. My apartment has all the necessities, except water in my kitchen. I did have water, until the downstairs neighbor asked me to stop using it because it has been leaking on their side. On Tuesday my landlord came by and explained, through his grandson who speaks English, that it is the main... Read more

Whatchu lookin' at?

By Holly on March 7, 2018 Track: Business Region: Europe

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:18 Its been 23 days since I landed in Berlin! My mind has been blown, expectations blasted, norms shattered, and faith strengthened like literally never before. (Yes, not figuratively) I’m am so excited to continue in this journey with Jesus as my guide, strength and ALL. Keeping my eyes FIXED on him is my number 1 priority.   1 radical truth I didn’t foresee coming to Berlin is the absolute necessity of “upping your spiritual game” and figuring out... Read more

Gutturals and Consonants and Aspirates, oh My

By Dana on March 1, 2018 Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

We’ve started language classes! 12 classroom hours a week for the next month. Our teacher is a soft-spoken young woman who has been very patient with us as we struggle through the alphabet and are continuously asking her to repeat letters or write them in English phonetics. People often say that German sounds angry because of all the guttural sounds of the language. I wonder what they would say about this one. There are three separate letters that are all gutturals, and at first, we couldn’t even tell them apart. Now that we are a week in, I think I’ve almost got it. Then there are the soft... Read more

A Letter to Future Goers

By Andrea on February 6, 2018 Track: Business Region: Europe

Future Goers, First off, before I get into any other thoughts, I want to say that everyone's journey is different. When reading this post, know that what I will say may have some relate-able aspects to it, but will never fully be your experience. Where the Lord is taking you may not be where He has taken me, geographically or spiritually speaking. As well, He may also take you on a different path than He took me. Even if you make it to Europe or even to Berlin, we are all different. Created uniquely and precisely, you are designed to have your own way, through your own eyes and your own... Read more

Back East

By Dana on February 1, 2018 Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

We are back East again. This is my second trip here since leaving the states, and by the end of the month I will have spent more time here than anywhere else since first taking off. Kinda funny, isn’t it? We arrived late Saturday evening, after missing one connection, and getting stuck in the capital’s airport for four hours. Honestly, not as bad as it could have been. Now we’ve launched right back into a 9-6 work mode. Which is a nice change from the routine-lessness of moving, unpacking, getting settled, etc. Not that that was particularly stressful, it was just unpredictable. Let me tell... Read more

"...I commit my cause,”

By Holly on January 31, 2018 Track: Business Region: Europe

“As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause,” Job 5:8   The time is almost here! Many of my good friends have already launched off to the field and in just 11 days I will too. Bittersweet just doesn’t seem to capture the crowd of emotions that dance around my heart in these final days. BUT over them all, God’s indescribable peace and confidence, that I am exactly where he wants me, shuts up all the fear, sadness and anxiety. Period.   One of God’s many lessons for me this past month in preparing me is housed in the book of Job. The Lord drew me to this book and he... Read more

Getting Ready for Goodbyes

By Claire on January 28, 2018 Track: Business Region: Latin America

Today is exactly one month until I leave Nicaragua. I can no longer avoid the thought of how heartbreaking the goodbyes will be. I have been asked many times, ‘’Why are you leaving us?’’ and ‘’Don’t you like Nicaragua?’’ For the first time in my life I am leaving something that is well established. After high school and college my entire cohort left along with me, but this time I am the only one leaving Nicaragua. People also remark, “Oh my gosh, your two years here went by so quickly!’’ I respond with a smile and nod while I internally roll my eyes. In reality, no it actually did not seem to... Read more

New Apartment, New Country, New Year

By Dana on January 1, 2018 Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

Happy New Year! 2018, here we come. For those of you who don’t get my email updates, we moved…countries. To sum it up, due to the ongoing visa volatility, particularly given our frequent travels in and out of the country, the team and organization have felt it best to move our location. Right now, there are just three of us on the field, but we will be adding 4 – 6 new members in the next 6 months. So, instead of waiting it out, and risking not getting in every time we travel out (and my boss travels at least once a month), not to mention not getting those teammates in, it was decided that... "O (insert your name HERE), hope in the Lord!"

By Holly on December 25, 2017 Track: Business Region: Europe

“I wait on the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchman for the morning, more than watchman for the morning. O (insert your name HERE), hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem (insert your name HERE) from ALL his iniquities.” Psalm 130:5-8    THIS is the hope in the valley. Christ is WORTH the wait, the perseverance, the struggle. Because, guys, only HE will redeem you. HE is the ONLY God with unending steadfast love and plentiful redemption. WAITING on the Lord: the... Read more

Far, Far Away

By Dana on December 1, 2017 Track: Business Region: Asia - Central

I’m in the far east, and it’s different. That might seem like an obvious statement, but let me elaborate the ways it is different. Let’s start with ground rules: Rule No. one – don’t drink the water unless it’s been boiled first. Rule No. two - don’t eat meat from street vendors; stick with the veggies and rice. The streets and the metro are very clean, there are trash cans and even recycling bins practically everywhere, and strict rules about food and drink on the metro. There are also street sweepers and cleaning personnel everywhere. Walking down the side walk you’ll notice a 12” strip,... Read more
