Goer blogs

By Seth on October 19, 2020 Track: Engineering - IT Region: United States

I heard about GoCorps while studying at Olivet Nazarene University. I graduated in 2018 with a computer science degree. Lord willing I am heading to Phoenix to help with a refugee ministry for two years. I would be serving as tech support and helping refugees learn English. I would also tell them about the Bible and the Gospel through storytelling. I hope to help make Christ known among refugees. Read more

Taking Off Our Shoes

By Dora on September 18, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hi friends, There’s a quote I first heard in a missions class that’s recently been on my mind. It goes like this,  “Our first task in approaching another people, another culture, another religion is to take off our shoes, for the place we are approaching is holy. Else we may find ourselves treading on another’s dream, more serious still we may forget that God was there before our arrival.”  – Kenneth Cragg I think it’s funny Cragg uses the illustration of taking off our shoes when approaching another culture, because my team and I literally do that everyday whenever we go into our refugee... Welcome Back

By Dora on August 31, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hey friends, On August 17 we officially opened our new English Center and welcomed back students for classes. It was great to reconnect with many returning students we hadn't seen in several months. They loved seeing the new English Center and repeatedly said how thankful they were to have a place to come to for community after being in their houses for so long. Our first English lessons included conversations on how the coronavirus has changed everyone's life and how we can feel many different emotions because of those changes. It's been special for our staff and volunteers to have those... Read more

Finally Arrived

By Eleanor on July 31, 2020 Track: Community Development Region: United States

What to write? So much has happened in the last 3 weeks since I've been here! I'm so so thankful for all of you who have lifted me up in this process of transition. The Father has been faithful in giving me the strength I've needed to dig in and start acclimating to the city. And He has been so good to me in showing me that I'm not alone.    Life has been filled with training and orientation to my job and role. While it is at times overwhelming, I've been so glad to stay occupied and have opportunities to get out in the city and meet (physically distanced) with coworkers and new found friends... Read more

A Chicken & A Turkey

By Dora on June 26, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hey friends! You know how you go into a store thinking you're going to buy only one thing, but then come out of the store with more than you expected? That's kinda what happened to me and my Rohingya friend. My friend had several chickens in her backyard and wanted to buy some feed for them. I agreed to drive her to a store and didn't think much of it. However when we went into the store and looked around, my friend noticed that she could get another chicken and big turkey for cheaper than normal! So she excitedly pointed to both of them telling the store clerk, "I want to buy these."... Read more

The Most Unlikely Places

By Dora on May 31, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hey friends, Where do you think we are when you see this picture? It may look like we’re in a big Asian market, but we’re actually in someone’s house garage! When I first started getting to know my Rohingya friends, I learned many of them shop at stores that their friends have right inside their homes. A lot of the stores have many different products from Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. They have everything from clothes, skin products, snacks, and even some electronics. I enjoy going to these little hidden stores with my Rohingya friends and seeing how each one is laid out. I often feel like... Read more

The Beginning of Ramadan

By Dora on April 23, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hi friends, Hope you're continuing to do well and hanging in there as we all continue to navigate this very interesting time.Today marks the beginning of Ramadan when our Muslim friends pray and fast for one month. During Ramadan, our friends often seek God more fervently than any other time of the year. Please join me in praying for my Muslim friends and Muslims worldwide. Ask God to show Himself supernaturally to them and that they would find Jesus and experience His transforming power in their lives. There are two prayer guides I'd recommend checking out if you'd like to pray for Muslims... Read more

A Different Kind of Month

By Dora on March 27, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hey friends, Hope you and your family are staying healthy, safe, and in good spirits. March has been a very long month for everyone, and we've had to adjust in so many different ways as COVID-19 impacts our communities. Things definitely slowed down for GoTEN staff and our ministries when the news of COVID-19 escalated at the beginning of this month. On March 17, we decided to stop all of our English classes since all schools in Arizona closed that same week. Since then, we've been laying low in our homes, but also keeping an eye on our refugee friends and seeing when any needs come up. Where... Read more

Family Across An Ocean

By Dora on March 5, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hey Friends! For the last two weeks of Febuary I traveled to Malyasia with two of my teammates to attend a minstry network conference. When we weren't at the conference, something really special we got to do was visit some of our Rohingya friends' families who lived in Malaysia. During one visit we met three of our friend's brothers with their wives and children. The family was super hospitable and cooked us a big meal. As we were eating, I couldn't help but be amazed at how our friendship with our Rohingya friend in Phoenix connected us with her family all the way in Malaysia and gave us an... Read more

Uniquely Beautiful

By Dora on January 30, 2020 Track: Ministry Region: United States

Hey Friends, This month we had a women's group in the English class and did a fun painting session together. We all painted a very Arizona-style scenic picture of a sunset and silhouette cacti. It was fun to see how each woman's style and creativity shined in their painting. Although we were painting the same thing, all of the paintings had their own unique beauty, and we could appreciate each of them when we saw them all together. This was a great reflection of our group. We were all women who each had our own unique beauty through our different cultures, stories, and personalities. When we... Read more
