The Soapy Mess

Posted on Thursday, August 25, 2016

Have you ever heard a phrase similar to “God likes to work through us”? I like this phrase because it shows that God redeems and uses His broken creation, like me, to bring about His plans and purposes. I had never really taken this idea any deeper, but the first night of training, the speaker concluded with a story from when he was in training that took this idea to a deeper level, God not only likes to work through us, but He finds joy in working with us.

There was a father who’s after meal chore was to wash the dishes. Whenever he washed the dishes, his 2 year old daughter would watch him. One evening, as she was watching him, she asked, “Can I help you wash the dishes?” The father was very busy with work and assignments, so his initial reaction was to refuse his daughter’s help because it would lengthen the amount of time it took to finish the chore. But his daughter was so cute and was so excited to help that he could not refuse. The chore that usually took about fifteen minutes alone then took one hour. Water and soap was everywhere and the father had to mop the floor and wipe down the walls after washing the dishes, but he found much joy in working alongside his daughter even though it took longer.

I am like the two year old daughter, going around trying to help God, and probably making a huge mess. God in His power and majesty could very easily reveal Himself to all of creation in mere moments. In His divine mercy and grace though, He not only brings about His plans and purposes through us, but also finds joy in doing it.
